Monster, fairy, angel and devil: all these descriptions have been applied to the Icelandic dancer and force of nature, Erna Ómarsdóttir. On the stage of We saw monsters, Erna and her troupe fling themselves about on stage in a mixture of rock concert, horror film, danse macabre and orgy. To the music of Valdimar Jóhannsson (who plays in a heavy metal band called Lazyblood together with Erna Ómarsdóttir) two blonde sisters in knee-high socks dance over specular surfaces of water, death seduces his victim, forests flourish like paradise, rivers of blood flow, and hands fly through the air. There is masturbation, transvestism, nudity, incest, torture and self-destruction. Dance, music and visual art combine to form opulent, symbolic images, and grace and violence go hand in hand. Monsters, says Erna Ómarsdóttir, are created in our heads out of fear of nature, darkness, the unknown and death. They are the dark side of our rationality. (from berlinerfestspiele.de)
